A lot of work goes on behind the scenes in any library to catalog books, audiovisual materials,
cds, internet sites, etc, and to create a library catalog that keeps everything organized. The
Library of Congress and Superintendent of Documents Classification Schemes are the primary
classification tools used to organize and classify materials. Subject analysis and organization
of all formats, including websites, is accomplished using the Library of Congress Subject Headings,
the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Cataloging Internet Resources Handbook. These and many other
tools are are used to promote consistency throughout the online catalog and the library's collections.
The people who make these things happen are the Cataloging Staff. Hopefully, this page will take some
of the mystery out of how the online catalog is created and how different materials are processed.
