  Patrons with Disabilities


Services

  • Reference appointments - Reference librarians are available for research consultation, including assistance with selecting databases and constructing search strategies. Please contact the Reference Department (501-569-8806) to schedule an appointment.


  • Pulling of materials and books - Members of the Reference and Circulation Departments will assist patrons in retrieving materials from the library stacks. Depending on the availability of staff, this service may have a 24 to 48 hour turn-around period. Please prepare the list of call numbers and/or journal titles to be left at the Circulation Desk.


  • Photocopying library materials - Members of the Circulation Department will assist patrons with photocopying of library materials. Patrons should discuss means of payment for the copies. Please inquire at the Circulation Desk.


  • Cooperative efforts with Disability Resource Center to have materials scanned and converted to online documents - Arrangements have been made between the Library and Disability Resource Center to have non-circulating items scanned and provided to patrons as electronic files. Please inquire at the Reference Desk for assistance.


  • Instruction sessions - Individuals attending library instruction sessions as part of a UALR course encouraged to take advantage of all special assistance used in regular classroom environment. If attending a workshop offered by a library department, please contact the Reference Department (501-569-8806) two to five days in advance to request the necessary assistive technology or interpreters.


  • Ask a Reference Librarian e-mail service - Individuals needing assistance with short answers to a question, in selecting a database, or creating an effective search strategy can submit their questions via the Ask a Reference Librarian form.

Equipment

Instructional Media Services, 5th floor

  • Kurzweil Reading Edge - The Kruzweil machine scans text and converts it to audio. The speed and volume of reading can be controlled by the user.


  • Computer - A computer in Instructional Media Services has been equipped with three software packages to assist patrons:


    • JAWS - a speech synthesizer/screen reader.


    • MAGic - an image enhancer that will enlarge the content of a screen to a variety of sizes.


    • Kurzweil - a PC-based reading system which allows the user to view a scanned page on the computer screen while listening to the text being read aloud.


  • Closed Circuit Magnification Readers and Monitors - The CCTV camera magnifies the image of printed material on the monitor. Through the use of a CCTV, the user can change the amount of magnification, the contrast, and maneuver around the whole screen, or focus on select area blocks.


  • Braille Writer - The brailler allows the user to manually produce materials in Braille.


  • Television Sets with Closed Caption options- Televisions offering closed captioning features can be requested.

Reference Services, 1st floor

  • Computer in E-resources - One computer in the Reference area has been given priority for use by persons with disabilities needing assistive software for searching library databases and the Internet. This machine offers:


    • JAWS - a speech synthesizer/screen reader


    • WYNN - a speech synthesizer that will highlight the words as they are read


    • MAGic - an image enhancer that will enlarge the content of a screen to a variety of sizes

  • TDD machine - The TDD machine is connected to the general Reference Desk phone line at 501-569-8444.


Materials

  • Websters Student Dictionary, Braille edition - The 36 volume dictionary is available in Instructional Media Services, 5th floor. The set has been assigned the call number Media PE 1628 .W 57 1967.


  • American Sign Language Tapes - Numerous video tapes demonstrating American Sign Language and its role in communication may be viewed in Instructional Media Services, 5th floor.
