Subject Area Liaisons
The liaison program is designed to build communication between the faculty and the librarians.
We provide specialized reference service and user instruction for faculty and graduate students by
the subject librarian responsible for that discipline. We offer general and specialized user
instruction sessions as desired by the faculty. For a complete list of liaison librarians, please
contact the reference services department.
Reference Assistance
During scheduled hours, librarians are available at the Reference Desk to help you use the library
efficiently and effectively. We can help you locate information and resources, demonstrate how to use
the various online periodical databases, catalogs, and the web. Assistance is on a first-come,
first-served basis. Individual research assistance is available by appointment.

Instruction Services
Library instruction services support members of the University community in the development of information
literacy competency skills based on the Association of College and Research Library (ACRL) standards.
The instruction librarian or liaison librarian can recommend and arrange a library course to accommodate
your needs. We can also help you when planning a library assignment. Please make reservations by contacting
the reference department or instruction librarian at 569-8809.
Services for Patrons with Disabilities
Individual assistance is available at the Reference Desk by appointment and upon request. Services include
assisting in the use of the online catalog, indexes and electronic databases. Reference librarians may direct
patrons to Circulation and Reserve Services, Instructional Media area, Interlibrary Loan, or Archives and Special

Collection Development
Suggesting a Book
We encourage you to participate in the development of collections by using the library liaison process.
Academic departments select a faculty member to serve as a liaison who facilitates communication between
the department and the Collection Development librarian. Liaisons also forward faculty requests for the
purchase of new materials to the Collection Development Librarian. Staff, students, and administrators
may leave requests for library materials in the Library's suggestion box. Although the Library cannot
order every title requested, it gives serious consideration to all suggestions. Please leave an email
or phone number if you want to be notified of the status of your request.
Suggesting a New Journal
The Library is able to subscribe to very few new journals, and often must cancel one subscription to
acquire another. To request a new title, send as much information as you know including the title,
publisher, price, and journal titles we might consider canceling to the Collection Development librarian.
Email mejames@ualr.edu or call 569-8816 for a list of journal
subscriptions in a specific subject area.
Requesting A Library Holdings Review
The Collection Development department prepares library holdings reviews for new courses and programs proposed by
the faculty. The Graduate and Undergraduate Councils require these reviews. Send requests for library holdings
review statements by campus mail or email along with a course description, syllabus, and bibliography
if available. Typically the review is prepared within 10 working days. Email
mejames@ualr.edu or call 569-8816 for more information.
Donating Library Materials
The Library accepts donations of books, journals, and other materials for its collections. Gifts are searched
against the Library's holdings and those that are not duplicates and in good condition are added to the
collection if they meet the Library's selection critieria. Items not added are stored for the Library's
book sale. All gifts are tax deductible, but the library is not allowed to give a statement of value
because the IRS considers it an interested party. Include a name and address with your gift and the Library
will acknowledge that a donation has been made. Email mejames@ualr.edu
or call 569-8816 for more information.
