What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is a plagiarism prevention tool used to assist instructors in identifying students who have submitted unoriginal work. It also acts as a powerful deterrent to stop plagiarism before it begins. Students may be asked by their instructor is submit assignments directly to Turnitin.com. More…

UALR Access

All currently employed staff and faculty will have access to the Turnitin plagiarism service. As the campus administrator the library will provide administrative assistance and training, of this product. Check the Library Event Calendar for instructor training sessions.

How it works

Turnitin maintains three databases of content. Submissions will be electronically compared to:

  • Both a current and extensively archived copy of the publicly accessible internet (more than 4.5 billion pages updated at a rate of 40 million pages per day);
  • Millions of published works, including commercial periodical databases, and tens of thousands of electronic books including the Gutenberg Collection of Literary Classics;
  • Millions of student papers already submitted to Turnitin.
Any text in the submitted paper that is found by the system to be unoriginal appears underlined, color-coded/numbered, and linked to its original source. More…

Getting Started and Turnitin assistance

Before using Turnitin in the classroom make sure your students:

  • Have a clear and concise understanding of plagiarism. Direct students to the Turnitin Research Resources page for definitions, guides, and help.
  • Understand the penalties and/or consequences of student plagiarism. Direct student’s to the student information page of Copyright Central.
  • Are aware that you are using Turnitin for plagiarism detection. Provide a statement on your syllabus or web page explaining your use of Turnitin.
  • Understand what will be required of them if they should refuse to use Turnitin.
  • Direct student’s to Turnitin’s Student Training Video.
